OUTCOMES OF MLA AGM POSITIVE: WAFARMERS

The Western Australian Farmers Federation (Inc.) (WAFarmers) welcomes the outcomes of the Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) annual general meeting (AGM), noting that the industry will benefit from the decisions made by growers nationally.

72.5 per cent of MLA members voted to maintain the cattle transaction levy at its current rate of $5 per head.

WAFarmers President Mike Norton said that such a strong vote in favour of retaining the current levy indicates that Australian beef producers are willing to invest in the future of their industry.

“The $5 beef levy will enable MLA to continue to invest in marketing activities for Australia’s beef and livestock, which will help maintain high levels of consumer expenditure on Australian meat in both the domestic and international markets.”

“The Australian meat and livestock industries need to be well positioned to take advantage of the growing populations and strong economies in Asia. The continuance of the levy will assist with this.”

The MLA AGM also saw Peter Trefort re-elected as MLA Board Director for the third time, while Iain Mars and Dr Greg Harper were also appointed to the Board.

“WAFarmers congratulates Mr Trefort on his re-election to the Board and welcome the two new members to the MLA Board. Their combined expertise is certain to make a difference to the industry.”

“This is a positive step forward for the Australian beef industry,” Mr Norton concluded.
